Space Within Space – Using Visual Alchemy to Elevate to Music Videos for Familia London
Pioneering production company Familia London recently entrusted us with two captivating music video VFX projects.. The first video spotlights the English DJ and producer, Jonas Blue, while the second showcases renowned North London Indie-Folk band Kawala. Our collaboration with Familia London on these music videos was an exciting journey, blending visual effects with the magic of music.
The song, Perfect Melody, is a collaboration between multi-platinum producer Jonas Blue and renowned British singer-songwriter Julian Perretta. These artists, who met in 2016, have crafted an irresistible summer romance anthem with Perretta’s emotive vocals harmonizing over a soulful guitar, an infectious beat, and breezy keyboards.
One big challenge for the video production was extending the floor and catwalk beneath Jonas in certain shots due to space constraints in the studio. Of course, we took this particular job in our (and Jonas’s) stride, as well as performing the usual wire removal and minor touch-ups throughout the footage.
To create a seamless visual experience, we executed a “blackout painting” technique to conceal any remnants of the studio environment, ensuring the focus remained on the music video’s artistry. In a spectacular finale, we added lighting effects to several shots, particularly those featuring two dancers cradling a small planet in their hands. These effects not only illuminated the scene but also infused it – and the video as a whole – with a touch of magic.
In the second project, our focus on the Kawala music video centered on creating captivating ‘world within a world’ Droste-style transitions. In a playful performance promo directed by Francis Wallis, Kawala explores a dynamic, ever-expanding universe of rooms and scenarios nested withing each other, perfectly echoing the concept inspired by the Droste effect. The video impressively balances conceptual aesthetics with a contemporary, slick twist.
The trippy editing and stellar performances create a fresh, well-executed concept that seamlessly blends effects and live-action elements. We skilfully implemented numerous transitions, seamlessly weaving subjects in and out of the subsequent shots. The dynamic Droste effect injects a surge of energy into the music video, ensuring a riveting visual journey from start to finish.
To enhance the overall visual experience, we crafted these transitions with meticulous attention to detail. The intricate weaving of subjects introduced an element of intrigue, drawing viewers further into the video’s narrative. The result is a music video that not only engages on an auditory level but also enthrals the audience with its mesmerising and ever-evolving visuals, making it a true feast for the senses.
