This summer, our team embarked on an exhilarating journey with Seoul-based Ambience Seoul. Led by the visionary executive producer, Downy Jung, their reputation for excellence preceded them so of course we jumped at the opportunity to collaborate on a music video shoot for a K-pop sensation right here in Budapest.

From the bustling streets of Seoul to the sun-kissed shores of Los Angeles, Ambience Seoul’s global presence and unwavering dedication to their craft have set them apart in the industry since their inception in 2018. As we got stuck into discussions with their team, it was soon clear that their passion for storytelling and attention to detail mirrored our own.

With clear objectives set from day one, our collaboration unfolded seamlessly as we navigated through the intricate planning stages. We had every aspect of music video production in Hungary covered, from negotiating crew rates to scouting picturesque locations. Every aspect of the production was carefully managed to bring the client’s vision to life.

As the anticipation built, we welcomed members of the Korean crew to Hungary, ensuring their comfort as we showed them the breath-taking locations selected for the video shoot and additional photo shooting. The first day was dedicated to photography production.

For this, we managed the locations, supplied equipment and catering, transported the crew and provided some Hungarian crew members along with a Korean-Hungarian interpreter to ensure smooth communication.

Then came the video shoot itself. From the cobblestone streets of Budapest to the sprawling landscapes of the countryside, each location was meticulously scouted and prepared to serve as the backdrop for the music video’s narrative.

This included obtaining all the necessary permits, closing and emptying public spaces for the shoot day, and preparing the locations for filming.

In one location, a field adjacent to a steelworks, we had to clear some bushes and trees. Then, to restore the ecological balance, we planted some more in another location.

This field then had to be transformed into a football pitch, complete with stands and other facilities – no problem! We even created the artificial dust and smoke needed to create just the right atmosphere on screen.

As one of the leading production services company in Budapest, we provided Ambience Seoul with a complete, one-stop service. After the photo production stage, it was time to bring the project to fruition. From the bustling city streets to the industrial backdrop of a steel factory, our team worked tirelessly to transform each setting into a cinematic masterpiece.

At the heart of the production was a relentless pursuit of perfection, with camera movements choreographed exactingly and every detail mapped out with precision. the result was a seamless fusion of artistry and technical precision.

Despite the inevitable challenges that come with such ambitious undertakings, including the threat of rain looming over our second location, we persevered with unwavering determination. Thanks to the almost telepathic synergy between our teams, and our shared commitment to excellence, we overcame every obstacle to deliver a truly exceptional outcome.

This unforgettable collaboration was a happy reminder of the power of unity and the beauty of two cultures in harmony. Ambience Seoul came for professional production services Budapest, but everyone involved in this project came away with so much more than that – the memories we’ve created and the bonds we’ve forged will endure for years to come.

When documentary maker Daniel Catullo from 10 Lives Content asked about our availability for a 2-day long shoot, we were able to jump on board quickly, and immediately sent over a selection of DOP reels, as he was eager to work with a professional video crew in Budapest.

He selected one of our favourites, Zoltan Devenyi, for the project – a documentary about the Hollywood Vampires’ concert in Hungary, including interviews with the stars and additional B-rolls of Budapest.

By the time Daniel and his co-producer Andrew stepped off the plane from LA, we’d arranged a meeting at their hotel. Here, Daniel shared detailed info about the band and its members, so we’d know exactly who we needed to meet and how to interact with them.

When it came to the location for the interview parts the film, Daniel was interested in a mysterious or gothic dark interior, such as a medieval-looking museum. After considering various options, we ultimately chose to film these scenes in the Corinthia Hotel’s ballroom, where all the talent and the 10 Lives team were staying. This offered both convenience and an astonishing backdrop.

The production spanned two days. On the first day, we were scheduled to record the show, conduct some small interviews at the venue, and capture general B-rolls as the stars arrived and prepared for the concert. We began the interviews at the arena just before the concert with Buck Johnson, Chris Wyse, and Glen Sobel. After that, our crew was ready and waiting for the stars to arrive at the venue, along with thousands of fans at the entrance.

But just before the show was about to begin, we received the disappointing news that it had been cancelled due to Johnny Depp falling ill. This setback left us uncertain if the second day would proceed as planned, but the producers reassured us that everything would go ahead as scheduled.

Several Hollywood Vampires had previously been cancelled due to an ankle injury sustained by Johnny Depp in May.

The next day, we set up the ballroom early, ensuring all lights were in place and conducting tests with the Jimmy Jib, per Daniel’s request. Although ultimately we weren’t  able to interview Johnny Depp, we successfully filmed interviews with Alice Cooper and Tommy Henriksen. As of writing this post, Daniel and Andrew have held the remaining interview with Johnny Depp in Los Angeles, and the film is on track for completion soon.

We’d like to thank 10 Lives Content for the opportunity to collaborate with an Emmy-awarded director and to work with such iconic figures while they were in Budapest.
– A surprising story to the end:
We asked Andrew what brought them to us. Andrew said when they were searching for a film production company in Hungary that offers professional production services, they used AI (ChatGPT) to see which companies the system recommends that ticks all their needs.

Pioneering production company Familia London recently entrusted us with two captivating music video VFX projects.. The first video spotlights the English DJ and producer, Jonas Blue, while the second showcases renowned North London Indie-Folk band Kawala. Our collaboration with Familia London on these music videos was an exciting journey, blending visual effects with the magic of music.

The song, Perfect Melody, is a collaboration between multi-platinum producer Jonas Blue and renowned British singer-songwriter Julian Perretta. These artists, who met in 2016, have crafted an irresistible summer romance anthem with Perretta’s emotive vocals harmonizing over a soulful guitar, an infectious beat, and breezy keyboards.

One big challenge for the video production was extending the floor and catwalk beneath Jonas in certain shots due to space constraints in the studio. Of course, we took this particular job in our (and Jonas’s) stride, as well as performing the usual wire removal and minor touch-ups throughout the footage.

To create a seamless visual experience, we executed a “blackout painting” technique to conceal any remnants of the studio environment, ensuring the focus remained on the music video’s artistry. In a spectacular finale, we added lighting effects to several shots, particularly those featuring two dancers cradling a small planet in their hands. These effects not only illuminated the scene but also infused it – and the video as a whole – with a touch of magic.

In the second project, our focus on the Kawala music video centered on creating captivating ‘world within a world’ Droste-style transitions. In a playful performance promo directed by Francis Wallis, Kawala explores a dynamic, ever-expanding universe of rooms and scenarios nested withing each other, perfectly echoing the concept inspired by the Droste effect. The video impressively balances conceptual aesthetics with a contemporary, slick twist.

The trippy editing and stellar performances create a fresh, well-executed concept that seamlessly blends effects and live-action elements. We skilfully implemented numerous transitions, seamlessly weaving subjects in and out of the subsequent shots. The dynamic Droste effect injects a surge of energy into the music video, ensuring a riveting visual journey from start to finish.

To enhance the overall visual experience, we crafted these transitions with meticulous attention to detail. The intricate weaving of subjects introduced an element of intrigue, drawing viewers further into the video’s narrative. The result is a music video that not only engages on an auditory level but also enthrals the audience with its mesmerising and ever-evolving visuals, making it a true feast for the senses.

Hungary remains a popular location for filming, and the availability of high-quality infrastructure and services is one of the many attractions. We are proud of our contribution to this thriving industry, so when we were asked to take care of the on-set supervision for a thrilling Swedish historical/action film and an intense American thriller/horror it was all in a day’s (actually thirteen days’) work for Cabbage Film Factory.

The first movie, Stockholm Bloodbath, is an upcoming English-language historical drama directed by Mikael Håfström and scripted by Erlend Loe and Nora Landsrød. The film revolves around the events of the Stockholm massacre, a historical event that took place on the site of Sweden’s present-day capital between 7th and 9th November 1520, leaving an indelible mark on the country’s history.

Our VFX supervisors were present on set for 13 days during the production. Our involvement began in November 2022 with VFX walkthrough meetings and a location scout in Szentendre’s  Skansen (an open-air museum showing Carpathian folk architecture and life), where we inspected one of the main shooting locations that had already been prepared.

The initial filming took place in December 2022, involving a two-day night shoot at a Medieval backlot (near the small village of Göböljárás), focusing mainly on interior scenes. In this phase, we assisted with fire effects, and deployed markers and VFX balls. These markers and balls were essential for the Swedish post-production team to add 3D elements to specific scenes.

Besides this, at the second primary location in Páty, action scenes were filmed outdoors with additional crowd simulation to be incorporated afterwards. The rest of our work took place in Szentendre (Skansen), where a burned-down church, additional 3D arrows, and various action scenes will be added on-screen.

Another movie, the US production House of Spoils, was filmed at multiple sites including Ráckeresztúr and Brauch Manor in Pázmándy, which was the main location. Various scenes were captured both indoors (including the basement), and outdoors. The shooting spanned approximately 30 days, with a mix of daytime and night-time filming. The primary set was a rural mansion where we provided our VFX services for several scenes.

Our VFX supervisors worked closely with the production team for several days, ensuring smooth coordination and giving the full benefit of our expertise. Our tasks included setting up CG insects, a CG rabbit, fruits, a rotting arm, and everything else the American team needed. To ensure smooth post-production for them, we performed technical supervision and scanning, and aided in capturing clean plates, mainly through 360-degree photography. We are proud to have helped bring these cinematic wonders to life, and extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ingenuity Studios (Los Angeles) and Edisen (Stockholm) and all those who entrusted us with their visions. Our partnership with top Hungarian production company MEGAFILM is based on a solid foundation of trust and proven reliability, built over many years through countless successful collaborations.

So, when they needed a post-production studio for their latest TV series, the Fairy Garden (Tündérkert), we were the natural choice. From the inception of this show, we took on management of the entire post-production workflow. Our dedicated on-set supervisors had a key role in assisting the production crew, meticulously planning all the scenes that needed visual effects. They also served as an additional set of eyes for the director and DOP during filming. Meanwhile, our diligent DI technician took charge of handling the rushes on a daily basis. This involved preparing the dailies and editorials, ensuring the footage was securely stored, and creating backups and archives to safeguard the valuable content.

Once the picture was locked, our exceptionally talented VFX team embarked on a remarkable journey, taking numerous scenes to the next level across the eight-episode series. Our skilled VFX crew harnessed a range of cutting edge software and platforms to unlock the full potential of a staggering 600 meticulously crafted VFX shots. We created majestic castles, extended diverse environments, orchestrated the construction and demolition of towers, removed or retouched garments, crew members, and equipment. We also put swords and knives into the hands of soldiers, added realistic blood effects, and these were just a few of the awe-inspiring tricks we had up our sleeves. As we close this chapter of our VFX and colour grading journey for the Fairy Garden series, we would like to thank MEGAFILM for once again trusting in us to bring their creative vision to life. Cabbage Film Factory and Kraft Rental ventured into uncharted territory when they put on a ground-breaking full-service party for film and advertising industry professionals.

Cabbage parties have always been renowned, but this event surpassed all expectations in terms of its scale and magnitude. We were aiming to create something truly unparalleled, and a lasting benchmark for future endeavours. The idea originated with Cabbage, but we joined forces with Kraft to bring the idea to life, inviting clients, friends, and even industry competitors, fostering a spirit of true camaraderie without any limitations. The guest list encompassed a wide range of professionals, including film producers, agency producers, accounts executives, production managers, directors, cinematographers, art directors, gaffers, stylists, makeup artists, creative directors, production designers, editors, VFX artists, coordinators, copywriters, script supervisors, unit directors, assistant directors, and many more.

Besides being a great platform for networking and collaboration, the event also provided a moment of respite and relaxation for hardworking individuals in the industry. Throughout the evening, guests were treated to a variety of entertainment and immersive experiences. From live performances by talented artists to thought-provoking interactive installations. The dance floor pulsed with energy as professionals from various disciplines mingled, swapped ideas, and forged new connections. Our goal was to invite everyone within the industry. Last year the Hungarian film production company Megafilm invited us to work on their latest feature film as their visual effects partner. So we joined the team to make sure that all the shots were ready for the VFX elements.

Our experienced VFX and animation team is getting us more and more enquiries for post-production services. Especially photo-real VFX services. Megafilm’s producers also know that besides being a production service company, our business has evolved into an internationally recognised post-production studio. 

In numbers:

• The movie was filmed at a total of 12 spectacular locations in Hungary, including a lakeside and a castle
• More than 100 filmmakers worked on the production
• Of these, 30 were responsible for post-production

Our post-production studio’s team was on board from the very beginning. After reviewing the storyboard, our experts and the technical director Gulyás Buda conceptualized the look and feel of the VFX shots and created production plans.
Our VFX supervisor was on set throughout the roughly 60-day production. He was giving guidance for the production team, overseeing the whole VFX project and taking responsibility for achieving the creative objectives.

But the work didn’t stop there. The post-production of the VFX shots took 10 VFX artists approximately 6 months to complete. During this process the film’s director and technical director visited us monthly to check that everything was on track.

Thanks to our DCI-standard grading room we were able to do screenings helping us to meet the high standards set by ourselves as well as the directors.

The guys from Blank Square Productions, had filmed some (not surprisingly) stunning footage in Los Angeles, again.
A French Montana music video production. However, they hadn’t been able to shoot the scenes that featured Saweetie there. So we came into the picture since she was in Budapest at that time.

Blank Square Productions are known for their quality content and great up-and-coming directors in the field of music videos. Andres Garcia, head of production at Blank Square emailed us to ask if we could shoot Saweetie in a green screen studio in Budapest ASAP.

Although we knew this would be an intense project, we were happy to accept the challenge happily and immediately started gathering all the requirements. Including special camera equipments, the crew, and renting a green screen studio. Everything was ready only in two days. It was all very last-minute, but we made it—in fact, everything about the production went smoothly. Thanks again to all the crew members involved on both sides.

Edgar Esteves is one of the most in-demand music video directors nowadays. Before the shoot, he and his co-director Jon Primo, together with the DOP Camilo Monsalve, explained in detail how we needed to film Saweetie so that her shots could be used in their music video.

We met Saweetie’s team at Origo studio—one of the biggest movie studios in Europe.  Our team was already ready to go. Saweetie got her makeup and hair done behind the scenes and dazzled us with her amazing costume. As soon as she was ready, we started our remote system, played the latest French Montana hit, Handstand, and rolled the camera.
Apart from the time constraints, the only surprise during the shooting was the need for a samurai sword that we had to source and bring back to the studio at a moment’s notice.

Thanks again Blank Square Productions. It was a stunning project and we absolutely loved it!

Vinne Liazza a producer and creative director for a Berlin-based production company was looking for production services for a long-awaited campaign photoshoot in Budapest with Willem Dafoe, for Numero Homme Berlin. When we got his email labeled URGENT, we knew there was no time to waste.

The next day his crew was already at our Budapest-based film production company, ready to kick off what turned out to be a wonderful project. It was a small, but fantastic team consisting of Götz Offergeld – Creative Director of Numero Homme Berlin, his assistant Luis Hartmann, the photographer Marco Cella and his assistant Leonardo Ventura, executive and creative producer Vinnie Liazza, makeup artist Fanni Hargitay and the local producer—Cabbage Film Factory’s own Szabolcs Moradi.
And of course, Willem Dafoe, who was working on a big Hollywood production, shooting his alternative take on the Frankenstein movie, “Poor Things” in Budapest. He had a day off that Numero Homme Berlin was able to get for their shoot.

Dafoe is best known for a string of unforgettable performances including his role as Sergeant Elias Grodin in Oliver Stone’s Platoon (1986) or the main villain, Green Goblin, in the Spider-Man movies (2002-2007). Besides being an award-winning actor—and a cultural icon with his expressive face and trademark laugh—he is great fun to be around both on and off the set, combining his remarkable acting skills and distinctive look with a stunning talent for doing impressions.

The campaign photoshoot in Budapest went like a dream, and we successfully captured the essence of his iconic gestures, unique style and unmistakable charm.
It was an honor for all of us at Cabbage Film Factory to welcome and work with a star of Dafoe’s caliber. We’re also thrilled that we were once again able to go the extra mile for our clients, who went away with a positive experience—fully satisfied with our production services in Hungary.

Sashinski (Sasha Nathwani), who learned filmmaking in the same school as Martin Scorsese, is a very talented and cool director. He rang us up and asked if we are interested in working with him on his next music video production for the Australian pop rock singer-songwriter and musician, Sam Fischer.
We not only said yes immediately because of hearing Sam’s name, but also because Sasha sounded very professional and strong-minded about his ideas. Two elements that are necessary for successful implementation of concepts and for great outcomes.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t fly out to London – just like in the previous case when we worked with Peter Lee Scott on the Whitley Neill Gin project. But even this issue could not stop us from managing and doing the supervision remotely, and like clockwork from our Budapest based film production company.
Sasha is well known for his creatively emotive films and for the very cinematic shots that focus on the subject. His top-notch scenes grab the audience attention and pull them into the worlds of the characters. Therefore, we were not surprised that he imagined a one-shot music video for Sam which left not so much room for mistakes for the production team during the shooting of the 3 minutes long video.

Our VFX team’s main job was to put 3D birds around Sam, to remove / add some smoke, put stars on the night sky, and to make the reflection on Sam’s glasses look better. Even though everything went as planned, there were some small mistakes we had to correct at the end. Fortunately, nothing serious, just like smoothing up the painted background where it was crumpled and a little camera stabilisation on the end of the video. We hope you will also enjoy Sam’s new music video and think about the effort that creatives put into it behind the scenes.

Sasha and the producer of the project James Fuller were fascinated by our work and gave us the highest praise that a production company can get in the filming industry: promised us to call and work with us again.

It is our passion to collaborate with creative minds on exciting projects and to bring quality content to the table. Therefore, we were eager to help Daniel Kontur – German-born, Hungarian film director and Netflix drama-series creator – to shoot his unofficial Burger King commercial, the ‘Taster’. It has been getting lots of positive feedback from the international audience and the professional press ever since it got uploaded to YouTube.

The one-minute-long commercial is based on the Saatchi & Saatchi LA creative agency’s script, written by Dan Sorgen and Andrew Reizuch. The remake was shot in a Russian-set scene from the 1950s and 60s with Hungarian actors in 2020 in Budapest. The funny story revolves around a hamburger – which was not only one but nineteen during the whole day-long filming. The selection of the shooting site was key. Together with the director, Szabolcs Móradi had checked 4-5 different options, and the final choice fell on the chosen location because of its unique atmosphere. During the production, one of the most difficult parts was to find the right actors. Especially, because nowadays there are only a few people who speak fluent Russian in Hungary. Thus, in the end, the actors, Gábor Maday, Zoltán Pintér, and Etele Kovács, got native Russian language assistance from a Russian language teacher as well.

The low-budget, guerrilla commercial, first has taken over Reddit’s social networking site, received more than 100,000 positive reviews, and generated many thousands of comments, then now got shortlisted at this year’s Young Director Award in Cannes.

Our valued friend Peter Lee Scott, award-winning director and owner of Odelay films, invited us to work with them on one of their recent TVC productions. Our acquaintance dates back to this summer, when Pete visited our VFX studio in Budapest. After seeing our presentation, talking to us about our services and seeing some of our work, he decided to try out our team for some VFX-heavy projects.

For the Whitley Neill Gin TVC project, Pete’s team were shooting a commercial that would give the impression of being a one-take shot, even though the four sets and locations were shot individually. That’s where we came in. Our VFX supervisor was on hand to give his team guidance before and during the shoot, which was important to ensure a smooth post-production process. What made the project so unique and challenging was the fact that we needed to supervise the work from Budapest online, without traveling out to London. Despite the unusual setup, everything went smoothly and without a hitch. After the shooting, we received all the RAW files and our VFX team started the post-production work on one 30sec and one 10sec version. They were two different versions, with different VFX tasks.

In the 30sec version, we were asked to connect the adjacent sets smoothly, to create an effect where the camera moves through the label of the bottle, remove some unnecessary objects from the set, and change labels on the moving and stable bottles. Last but not least, we added CG darts in the second scene the actor enters.
In the 10sec version we had to make full CGI darts that are thrown at a dartboard, and then change the label of the bottle at the end of the film.

Pete and his team were delighted with our production services, and we were thrilled to be a part of this exciting project. In fact, they were so happy with us that Vanessa – their producer – immediately recommended us to one of her friends for their upcoming music video production.
So, we got another call right after finishing the Gin job. Thank you, Pete, and thank you Vanessa! We hope to see each other again soon, hopefully next time in Hungary.

We’ve always been proud of our headquarters building, which was chosen to serve our mission as a leading production company in Budapest. Our facilities are designed with a focus on the needs of our clients and our employees.

Purchased in 2017, the Cabbage Film Factory building is situated in a leafy, quiet area of Budapest that’s a stone’s throw away from the centre and easily accessible from any part of the city. The building has all the space a film studio like us needs, with room to grow. The modernisation got under way following a consultation with the building’s original architect, the award-winning Ferenc Csagoly.

Our approach to the modernisation project was simple. We set out to meet the latest technological, and environmental requirements while giving the building a permanent upgrade in terms of style. The aim was to provide a welcoming atmosphere and even more pleasant working environment for our clients and staff alike. Accordingly, we retained the building’s original features on the street-facing facade, while the interior spaces were extensively renovated.

The building has been reengineered with sustainability in mind. All the doors and windows have been replaced, the external walls have received thermal insulation and other upgrades to meet the standards for insulation. A new garden and car park have also been created. These solutions benefit us and our clients and enable us to provide a healthy working environment. The project got underway before COVID-19, and was completed in six months, just before the pandemic broke out in 2019.

The improvements strike a perfect balance between modernising the building and retaining its unique character and features. Based on feedback, the project has been a runaway success. Our clients often tell us how much more they enjoy spending time with us in the welcoming new surroundings.

Cabbage Film Factory turned 20 in May 2019, and to make this important milestone in our history truly unforgettable hosted a phenomenal party at the Europa Congress Center. Our company has always been famed for the parties that we hold for our clients, partners, and staff to strengthen the bonds between us and celebrate the fact that, together, we are on the right track with our philosophy of creating a fantastic working environment, generating creative ideas and delivering the best services available.
It was in this spirit that we hosted the 20th-anniversary party for some 600-700 guests including the representatives of international and local media agencies, creative directors, account managers, film producers, and other filmmakers in Budapest. The party was as much fun as bringing our clients’ ideas to life. Entertainment during the all-night event included an Anna Amelie fashion show, concerts by The Carboonfools, Zagar and more…

Our anniversary party was more than just a celebration of our success. Once again, we’d like to thank everyone who has been a part of the Cabbage story – friends, clients, partners, and colleagues alike – for all of their support and hard work. Without them, this fantastic 20 years would not have been possible.

Cabbage is a Hungarian film production company that was founded by Gábor Mórádi, who started his career as an editor, compositor, and post-production coordinator at Studio 10 of the Hungarian public service provider Hungarian Television (MTV). Throughout the 1990s, he worked on post-production for most of the commercials made in Hungary and had exclusive contracts with 14 advertising agencies. He won several awards for his work at advertising film festivals. After leaving MTV, he went on to work as editor and producer at the Focus Fox Film Studio.

The Cabbage story begins when he established Cabbage Productions in 1996. He also founded Film Positive with Tamás Lajos, Péter Fazekas and Tamás Závodszky in 1998. He decided to leave the latter firm in 1999 and go it alone with Cabbage Productions, which was then operating as a post-production studio. In 2004, he established Picture Base, a production service company that remains in business to this day. Since then, Cabbage Film Factory—as reflected by our new name—has grown to become one of the biggest Hungarian film production company providing all the services needed for film production under one roof. We offer commercial production, film production, high-end visual effects for feature films and series with our in-house VFX company (Aboriginal Ideas). The company has its own professional camera equipment, a DCI standard color grading room, a sound studio and photo studio—all in-house.

In the past couple of decades, as a full-featured film production studio and video production company, Cabbage has also notched up an impressive track record in producing video and photo content for TV and online media platforms, working on both the production of entire projects and on the post-production stage. One of the secrets to Cabbage’s success is its dedicated and highly experienced team of film production experts, most of whom have been with us right from the very beginning—living that Cabbage is a great place to work.

But where does the Cabbage name come from?
We often get asked about the name, but not many people know that it was actually inspired by the tech giant Apple. The idea was simple: if Apple—named after a fruit—was able to grow as big as it did in the United States, then surely the similarly organically named Cabbage could be just as successful in its own sector here in Hungary!
